Online Resources

Use the online links section to provide a list of useful internet links for background, supplementary information, etc. In many formal metadata standards links either cannot be included or are not differentiated from plain text in other sections, so it’s best to collect them here.

Use these fields to document datasets or publications related to the dataset documented in the metadata.

Relationship Type	This field documenmts the association type between the dataset described by the metadata and the dataset or other resource being described in the ‘Related Resources’ section of the metadata. Use the drop-down to select the most appropriate association type code from the list. Code list definitions are provided elsewhere in the help docs. Initiative Type	This field describes the type of initiative, program, or larger effort for which the associated dataset was developed. Use the drop-down to select the most appropriate initiative type code from the list. Code list definitions are provided elsewhere in the help docs.	Several commonly applicable initiative types are: Campaign Collection Experiment Program Project Study
Related Resource Identifier	Use these fields to provide information about a unique identifier for the related resource.	Best practices and examples for the identifier code and authority fields are described elsewhere in the help docs.
Related Resource Citation	Use these fields to provide the title, publication date, point of contact information, URLs and link information, and any supplemental information about the related resource. Best practictes for providing contact information are provided elsewhere in the help docs, while advice on providing URL information are shown at the top of this page. The other fields should be pretty straightforward.

Graphic Summary

These fields can be used to document one or more official, preferred, or especially informative illustrations, plots, or visualizations of the dataset.

Graphic File Name or URL	If the graphic summary is a file included with the dataset, add the filename in this field. If the graphic is a file hosted and viewable on the internet, add a hyperlink to the location of the graphic. Is the file a URL?	Check this box if the value provided in the ‘Graphic File Name or URL’ field is a URL.	Imagine a checkbox. Now, imagine clicking on the box to fill it if the value in the prior field was a URL.
Graphic Description	Provide a short, textual description of the graphic summary.	Plots of monthly temperature anomalies at 4 depths from 1970 to the present.

Supplemental Info

This field can include anything that doesn’t belong in the abstract or is not related to the purpose of the research. Include any information that is important for understanding or using the data but doesn’t fit into the previous sections.

Metadata Info

These fields provide information about the person or position responsible for creating and maintaining the metadata record itself, the planned update frequency of the metadata, and any notes about any conditional or required updates to the metadata.

Metadata File Identifier	Use this field to add the specific, unique identifier that may have been applied to the metadata record (as opposed to the dataset). These identifiers are usually applied once a dataset has been archived or a metadata record has been published in a catalog. In most cases, your record won’t have one of these until after you’ve passed it on to DataONE or another archive.	5abbf56030c49e0008311981.19110

Metadata Update Frequency	Select the frequency code value from the dropdown that most closely matches any plans for how regularly any maintenance services or content updates will be applied to the metadata.	Annualy, As Needed, Not Planned, Unknown

Metadata Update Notes	Use this field to describe any planned maintenance or updates to the metadata content, as well as any effects of those updates on the applicability or validity of the existing metadata	Annual updates to the metadata will be made to reflect annual data updates and any changes to the collection procedures.
